Sir Alan Sugar's hopefuls eclipsed by sales of Tefal ActifryIt had an unlikely starring role in The Apprentice last week, undoubtedly contributing to the losing team leader well and truly getting his marching cards. On the show, Howard Ebison's team failed to sell enough Tefal Actifry deep fat fryers to keep him in the competition – but the product clearly appealed to viewers, with retailers reporting record sales since its appearance. Millions of viewers tuned into the hit BBC1 show last week to see the candidates competing with one another to sell a random selection of products – including the Tefal Actifry – on a home shopping channel. The electrical retailer Comet has reported a dramatic 224% increase in the deep fat fryer's sales in the days after the show, and a staggering 677% rise compared with the same period last year. The Tefal Actifry's main selling point is that it uses just one spoonful of oil to make enough chips for a family of four, 100 times less fat than a traditional deep fat fryer – which makes it much more economical to run, as well as safer and easier to clean.Bob Darke, Comet's commercial director said: "We are a nation of chip lovers so it's understandable so many people are rushing out to buy this product after seeing it on The Apprentice. It's an innovative product that delivers healthy chips – no wonder it's so popular."Last year, BBC1's Watchdog consumer programme received complaints about some Tefal Actifry units blowing out smoke, sparks and even catching fire. The manufacturer said it was aware of a small number (0.4%) of units suffering from a faulty fan motor overheating. But at least Apprentice afficionados were spared the sight last week of "Suralan" blowing a gasket and shrieking: "You're fried!"Consumer affairsThe ApprenticeFood & drinkguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2009 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
